All things martial arts training may be on hold soon
I talked with the Kobudo school to let them know i plan on showing up as soon as i am cleared to do so. They were happy I contacted them to let them know. they also have a karate class for old people like me, from 50 year old whipper snappers to geezers like me.. I may check that out after i get settled into Kobudo. Have become very interested in Karate due to the white crane connection. also have been in contact with my Wing Chun sifu. As soon as i can, i will head back there. At least i can practice Siu Nim Tao now. I couldn’t do that before, the shoulder would not allow. Also already returned to Taijiquan, but the shoulder still will not allow weapons forms. physical therapy starts this week, and in October i retire. So the shoulder has to get better. I will have all sorts of time to fill. Hopefully with training. That is as long as i do the ever growing list my wife has for me to do when I retire

The Official National Hockey League Appreciation Thread
When I lived in Massachusetts I followed the Bruins, but I stopped paying attention when I moved over 40 year ago. For a short period of time I thought I was moving back to New England and started following them again. But it didn't happen so I stopped following them. Apparently I need to be in New England to follow them. And I never got into the Rangers, even though I live in NYS. Must be because I grew up in New England

Belt system considerations…
I know Japanese martial arts have belts, but for the last 30 years I’ve trained traditional Chinese martial arts and there are no belt ranks. but with that said, when i started Japanese Jiujitsu in 1972 we only had white, green, brown and black belts. But we also had stripes on each belt for higher rank: 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree. When i did taekwondo in mid to late 70s it only had white, yellow, green, i think blue, brown and black belts my daughter’s Aikido school, for kids, had colored belts ranks, but adults wore a white belt until they got to black. But there were various ranks within the white belts i think it comes down to who you are teaching. If kids, multiple ranks may be good, it keeps the kids and parents happy. For adults, i would think a minimalist approach would work, but then it really all depends, in my opinion, why they are taking martial arts in the first place

Dropping Your Kid Off at School for the First Time
I know the feeling My daughter is a senior in College and I still remember the first day I took her to Pre-K. My wife ran her own office so she worked long hours 7 days a week. My mother and father watched my daughter during the day, but I watched her all evenings, all day Saturday and stayed home when she was sick. I drover her to pre-K, I was expecting her to cry and having to convince her to go in. We walked into the building, got to the door, she saw all the kids and waked right in. A little girl behind her started crying, she turned around and helped thte other little girl into the class. I was very proud of her for that, but a little devastated that she just walked in.. I too went home and did my share of crying, sat there most of the day watching the cartoons her and I watched. Happened again when I took her to the bus for kindergarten.... and again when we took her to college and left her there for school...

All things martial arts training may be on hold soon
Well… now i need to act like a responsible adult… and i’m not happy about it. A friend of mine has an Aikido dojo and i have wanted to try Aikido for years. He is starting an introductory class next month and contacted me to let me know. younger me would think, hey, my shoulder feel ok, i can handle it….and likely been surprised it was getting worse…a bit about me, my wife is from China, and even she told her family i was martial arts crazy… But the soon to be 65 me is saying i’ve spent more than a year dealing with this shoulder, it is not constantly in pain for the first time in months. I start PT next month… i really should finish PT before i start Aikido. Also my plan is to start Kobudo, after September, if the shoulder is doing ok. so, the responsible adult thing to do is wait. Going and re-injuring would very likely guarantee surgery and 3 to 6 months of recovery. i think it was when i hit 50 I realized, hey, these doctors actually DO know more than i do about recovery…which you would think i would have figured that out sooner… I’m married to a TCM OMD PhD So, holding off a little longer.

The Future of ISKF
I have been reading through this thread and I have a question, and if this is not in the appropriate place, I apologize. I mean no offense, but I don't understand the importance of these organizations; HDKI, JKA, ISKF, SKA, Etc. I have spent the last 35 years training mostly Chinese martial arts and there has been no outside organization, as far as I know, which is likely why I am ignorant of the reason for there existence. I was involved with one, through my youngest who spent many years in Aikido, in a dojo that was part of Aikikai. However, as far as I could tell, the dues paid to Aikikai basically gave you a record of your rank in that organization if you attended another Aikikai dojo. I also have a friend who runs an Aikido dojo that is part of DNA, Doyukai North America. And I do not understand the differences between those either. I will have to ask him next time I see him. I have nothing against organizations, but could someone please explain the reasons for these organizations

MD appointment done, got another X-ray got another Cortisone shot, back to Physical Therapy If this fixes things I'm good. If not it is MRI and likely surgery. It takes 3 to 6 month recovery from rotator cuff surgery I'm hoping for the recovery and then to Kobudo

Bruce Lee Day in Califonia
I too trained some JKD in the past. One teacher was a student of Jerry Poteet. Another trained with several of the first generation guys, but he was originally a student of my first teacher. And another was from the Dan Inosanto side of the fence. but Bruce Lee is not as big a deal in the Asian community on the east coast. But that didn’t stop me from finding the Bruce Lee statue when I was in Hong Kong and getting my picture taken with it

Chuck Norris Passed Away!!
The UFAF was Norris' organization and I am guessing that was the scheduled time for the UFAF International Training Conference. UFAF is the governing body of the Chuck Norris System, UFAF Krav Maga, and UFAF Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Two Handed Nunchaku
This is the video, he only does the 2 hand thing briefly

Two Handed Nunchaku
There is a video out there on YouTube comparing the standard Nunchaku to the So-Setsu-Kon Nunchaku, in that video he does briefly use the standard Nunchaku with 2 hands. I think it is a video by "Object History" under the title of "Long Stick-Short Stick Nunchaku (so-setsu-kon). But i have not seen it anyplace else, but then I have very little experience with the Okinawan Nunchaku. Hope to get more esperince in the future, but it doesn't help much now

Two Handed Nunchaku
Are you talking about the standard Nunchaku we are generally all familiar with or the So-Setsu-Kon Nunchaku? Or are you asking about using a pair of Nunchaku, one in each hand?

Have not seen the 2nd orthopedic MD for my second opinion, but my wife is a TCM MD/PhD from China and I got the records from the first MD and she read them. The first MD said minor tear, per my wife it is a partial tear... which could explain why it never seems to get better and is waking me up at 3:00am. I will know more mid August, hopefully. Or at least have a direction to go to get this fixed. But in the mean time, my kicks have gotten very bad since having major knee issues a few years back, so I am starting to work on them too
