White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. I was talking to a senior member at my Dojo. He said when he started he was given a white belt. when he was promoter to yellow he was told to buy some dye and dye it yellow. When he was promoter to green he was told to buy some green dyr dnd dye the same belt green. When he was promoted to brown he was told to dye the belt brown. The school only has 3 colors between white and black. This was in the 1970's.
  2. I just purchased a Ronin GI that came with a small pocket, approx. 2.5" x 4" on the left flap of the top of the GI on the inside. Where the tie is on the right of your body. Haven't worn it yet so don't know how convient/useful it is.
  3. Who knows you better than you? Awesome!
  4. After thinking about it I think I used an angle grinder to cut tire with a metal cutting blade on it. I think my circular saw would not cut the steel cords in the tire. Perhaps a different blade would have worked, but I already had the angle grinder with the metal cutting blade.
  5. Seems like there should be an easier way to convey the information in my above posts?
  6. When I made it with just one piece of plywood the plywood would bend when the pad was hit. So I cut 3 pieses of 2"x6" and screded them under the plywood solved that problem. I would also suggest you do something so not to get slivers from plywood. I sanded mine very smooth the added two coats of external paint.
  7. As for two people of different heights useing it I suggest making the post tall enough for the taller person then putting two pads on it at different heigths. and one for kicking.
  8. I made a pad like this except I used a piece of refridgeration form I found on ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/334172857724?itmmeta=01HSAASA7MSS2B9V0KDFR87CKD&hash=item4dce41257c:g:4VcAAOSwNPBhXl0N I also used a piece of tire lower on the post for kicking. Had to use circular saw to cut tire. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/87890630221023325/
  9. well, I can post links apparently. This is similar to what I did. Note metal bracket at bottom. This is where I attached the post to the 2'x4' plywood. https://www.ebay.com/itm/224963463280?itmmeta=01HSAASA76B2B21TXF7KC5D7HK&hash=item3460de0870:g:2VEAAOSwnLlibGOc&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4OxGx%2Buy2q90CexUJCH9asQj45GQafzOZs8UAWFttaLetF0XP%2F1oagxMmNuZR65fm0xyPwGFxAsSK4h2zr0p9ORZJqqj0OhXkWqU26cQPcJ7ADiWrlS8dUI3K3JglWMs7vTmZ%2FfWWdkQ6aofm91tbsIrEqOAjZN5xkEwimpR0O7CmumdOi0o2i7dzVpQhSpl1eR%2FaFqX0vGSwOJJTMscG2R43oV8TaktMAXQtXXXseheoQxpjX33LMEZKU%2BvitBpFAqkD2qSI1TsRQ%2BYuvMB%2B3znSVYW%2BeP%2FAlYtAk6cyw7P%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_Cj5crKYw another one
  10. Okay, I can't figure how to post pictures? maybe I don't have enought posts to be able to post pictures? Anyone?
  11. I made a makiwara using 2 pieces of 2'x4' 3/4" plywood, need 2 pieces because 1 piece of plywood will bend when the makiwara is hit while you are standing on plywood. Upright post is a 4x4 fence post from big box home building supply store cut on an angle lenthwise to give tapered shape. Attach pole to plywood with a fastener for attaching fence post to cement slab at home supply store. Uses 4 small bolts. You stand on the plywood and punch the pad. It is not permantely attached to anything and is easily movable. Look on Utube for videos on making the pad. This is similar except I atted it to the plywood pieces not floor. I like this way of attaching the pad as it has more spring/give to it. Here is another idea.
  12. I am new to this, been about 4 months now. I have allergy issues so I frequently need a hankerchief. So I cut up an old white pillow case to 6"x6" square. Hemmed it and sewed it to the inside of the left of my uniform top on a 45 degree angle. (think shoulder holster for a gun.) I keep my hankerchief there. It's about 3 inches from the edge of the GI top. About where you see embroidering on the left chest of the GI, except on the inside. Hankerchief lays flat and I don't think it is very noticeable. And it's soft. Not sure I would want to carry wallet, cell phone or keys there. But, it seems to work well for a hankerchief. My instructor sometime carries a kleenex inside the front of their GI. Just loose. When they noticed it they were impressed. Especially When I said I made it, not my wife. From reading this only issue I could see is if it weakened the material to where it would tear easier. It's a "comes with dues" SUN GI so probably not very strong to begin with. But, for now it seems to work fine.
  13. I have been retired for 10 years and just started Karate 9 weeks ago. I have alway been interested but never had time/money before. Now I have both, so here I am. Do to age and health issues probably will not achieve much in many peoples eyes. But that is ok with me, I am doing what I can.
