  1. This is great information. I wonder if this will now have competitors only prepping 2-4 katas, vs 8-10. I also wonder if this will now bring some of the longer more advances katas to the for front statistically since less katas will be performed and you would need to lead with a stronger kata instead of saving it for later. Do posters on this board feel as a judge/competitor that you almost have to have a jump in the kata? The the rise of Unsu, chantanyara, and superempi along with the added jumps in kata's such as kosukunsho make me wonder if jumping is becoming one of the mainstays for top katas. Interestingly if they bring in actual technical experts several of the current competition kata timings will need to be changed. 2019 will be very interesting from a WKF point of view.
  2. How is judging expected to change next year? I haven't followed wkf to closely but will be taking a few students to some of the Midwest competitions. Are the changes on usankf yet? Thank you. 7 judges. Separate scores for technical and athletic performance (the flag system will be gone). It will be in effect from Jan 1 2019 and introduced at the Paris Open in Jan. . The Chairs of the five continental referees commissions will attend a briefing at that event. What will be interesting is how regional events implement it. Hmm, so back to something similar to the old scoring system. Head to head scoring or total scoring in a group? I haven't check the wkf or usankf sites yet but are the rules now published there? Thank you.

  4. I just returned home from the WKF World Championships. I would estimate that Shito Ryu kata comprised 70 to 80 % of the Kata performed in the individual divisions. All four finalists (Male and Female) performed Shito Ryu. In the women’s final both did Chatanyara Kushanku. The Men’s were one Annan Dai and i think the other was also Chatanyara. There was far more Shotokan in the team events. Interesting no unsu from shotokan or gojushiho from goju ryu. I wonder if people are tired of unsu and superiempi. Did anyone try to cross style and run shotokan kata like unsu, then a goju ryu such as gojushiho, and a shito ryu kata? I wish I could find a list of all kata run like in the study posted above.
  5. Anyone running the wkf circuit? Are you finding certain types of kata more successful? Do you mix styles to perform what you feel is the best scoring version of the kata?
  6. There is no correct route. But what shotokan kata is it rooted from. Watch the bunkai from that kata to see how your modified interpretation may be. Depending of the goal and footing of the technique all of what you described would work.
  7. I enjoy the older students as well. The importance of footwork and positioning really stand out. When younger one can over come such deficiencies through flexibility and strength. The old we get the exactmess of the move becomes ever more apparent. On a side note it is near impossible for me to read this forum on a phone without my glasses.
  8. I normally don't do introductions since it seems like a place to brag but out of respect for the forum I figured I should say hello. I am a 5th Dan with the world shito kai karate federation. Started in 1987 First rank was in shudo-kan Okinawa karate in 1995 First rank in shito kai occurred in 2000 I was drawn to the forum liking for feedback on equipment and prep for some wkf/usankf and wskf competitions.
  9. A few questions How long has she been studying and would you say she compares to a mahiro takana or a level you see at a wkf junior competition? You can YouTube several wkf junior examples to see different kata at different levels of ability. Since your style is non traditional would you be willing to take a traditional kata and add a jump into the kata? Probably not affable to for privacy reasons but is there a published video of your student doing kata to give us an idea of how she moves, her strengths and weaknesses? There have been several good suggestions but i hesitate to suggest a kata without know more. The kata could be anything from a jitte to a papuren
