Bad Judges
wingchunner replied to Pogo's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
...I was judging at a tournament when I was in my younger twenties. I was judging over 35 black belt division. At the tournament that I was judging at, black belts were rated a score from 7 to 9 while lower ranks were rated from 6 - 8. The lower rank division was right before the sr. adult black belt division. During that time, an African American black belt did a great job on a very traditional form. However, I had rated him a 7.6 because my mind was still in the range of the lower ranks. He came up to me after the division was over and asked me why I had scored him so low. I told him I thought he did well except for a few minor things during his performance, but that over all he did well. He just walked away frustrated. I didn't realize until I was driving home after the tournament what I had done. I felt terrible. The gentleman was from Chicago. So, if by chance you (the African-American Gentleman Sr. Blackbelt) read this post. My deepest apologies. My hope is that you didn't think I scored you low because I am biased against African-Americans (which I am not and make a consciencious effort not to be), I score you low because I made a mistake. You deserved an 8.6 instead and should have placed much higher. Again, my apologies. Martin Yoder -
Yes. Ken is a rare find. You're welcome to come visit our school in Cleveland. We have an open invitation for anyone to try our hands. Ken may give seminars in Rochester NY from time to time. He usually gives a seminar in Cleveland at least once a year. I'd recommend you contact Carl if you're intersted. Also, they do a Wing Chun Camp in San Fran. CA every year around May or June for 3 or 4 days. You might get more out of going to that. Marty

Hey guys, there are some more video clips on the site now. I don't have the direct link, but if you go to http://www.immortalpalm.com and click on the "news" button from the menu on the left it's the latest addition to the video clips. I was talking to my instructor tonight, and he said he'll be putting more and more clips up every couple weeks. I hope you guys are enjoying them. Marty PS we don't really have uniforms except for a Tshirt.

Here are some of me doing some different Martial Arts: First one is bits of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan (simplified short form) put together. Second is bits of Fu style (Yang palm) bagua. The third is one of the exercises I do on the Wing Chun dummy. And, the fourth is a bit of Chen style Tai Chi Chuan. http://wingchunner.tripod.com/id16.html http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=fuyangbgc1g7g http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=wcdummyex http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=chenyilu123 This will give you a bit of an idea of what some of the internal martial arts (at least the ones that I do). Wing Chung
wingchunner replied to NineTailedFox's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
quite a bit of theory. But the basic idea(s) about Wing Chun are this: Use position and sensitivity which will economize what the person has to defend themselves. Marty -
One inch Punch training......hows it done?
wingchunner replied to Samurai Shotokan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The one inch punch displayed by Bruce Lee is different from one inch energy. Wing Chun (especially the style I train) works on one inch energy (or even no inch energy). To see it doesn't make sense. You have to feel it. the basis of the training is siu nim tao (sil lim tao) Marty -
Actually, lineage is an important factor. It doesn't gaurentee success, but with good lineage along with a good instructor who is dedicated to your success and provided you are a dedicated and diligent student, your skill will become great compared to most wing chun practitioners in the world today. You shouldn't need a lot of dit da jow for the dummy, especially as a beginner. The dummy should be worked with, not beaten. If you use to much force you won't let the dummy teach you. Here are some video clips of my instructor. http://wing-chun.nu/cwc_video_clips.htm He uses more energy in the clips, but he's not beating the dummy. He's allowing the dummy to test his structure. As your structure improves, the amount of energy that you can send in and absorb back from the dummy increases. Good luck Marty
