  3. Here..... The style of Preying Mantis is one of the most famous in China. It is said to be founded by Wang Lang of the Shantung area during the fall of the Ming dynasty. That was over three hundred years ago. It is one of the most well known styles in the martial arts world of this day. Wang Lang was once a student of the Shaolin temple. During a trip into the woods one day, he by Chance came upon a fight between a preying mantis and a cricket. The mantis was quick and subtle, it's movements continuous and has great awareness of advance and retreat. Seeing this, Wang Lang was inspired deeply, feeling that if he could imitate the fighting techniques of a praying mantis, he would be able to elevate his own skills. After a long time of observation, he finally invented new twelve moves such as Nian ( Finger hold ), Nian ( stick ), Tie ( close in ), Kwa ( lean ), Diau ( catch ), Jin ( advance ), Bang ( pulse-strike ), Da ( strike ), Gou ( hook ), Lou ( twist ), Cai ( grab ), and Gwa ( lift ). Along with combining the essence of seventeen northern styles, as well as the footwork of a money, he created the style of Preying Mantis. So in a sense, the Preying Mantis style is a product of the strengths of at least eighteen different styles. With its wide variety of moves, it became of the more unique styles in the martial arts worlds. The Mantis style consists of seven long distance and eight short distance techniques. Factors such as long, short, hard, soft, aggression, regressions, directness, deception, form and will at all found within the style. After continuous development, many routines has been established. Each of them are calls for the qualities of intricacy, complexity, agility and having the image of a fighting mantis. Since it's founding, the Mantis Style has had a successor in each generation. Over the year many different branches has emerged: Seven Star Preying Mantis, Plum Blossom Preying Mantis, Six Harmonies Preying Mantis, Taiji Preying Mantis as well as other branches such as Bright Board Preying Mantis Looking from an outsider's point of view, the characteristics of each style of the Mantis styles varies greatly in terms of bodily movements, footwork and techniques. However, as they originated from the same source, their hand techniques are quite similar in the broad sense. For example, in actual combat, each of them focuses on rapid attack and speed. Little movements causes the fast chain reaction of attack with enormous power. Its ability to send numerous blows simultaneously, Change strategy in short notice, accommodation of hands and feet together are but a few of the characteristics shared by the styles of Preying Mantis. The early advancement of the Preying Mantis style was based mainly in the north of China. During the early ages of the Republic, it was brought to the south by masters such as Lou Guang-Yu, Jaw Zhu Xi. Afterwards, it was passed to areas of Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Today, even foreign places such as America and Europe have practitioners of this art. Information from University of Hong Kong Chinese martial Arts club hongpage

  7. "The idea that all martial arts coming from Shaolin is correct as well as incorrect at the same time. Contrary to popular belief, the beginning of Shaolin’s fighting system was not brought to China by a Monk going by the name of Dharma. Instead, if we look into prehistoric evidence, there were already some form of tool-based combat used in times as early as the stone ages. So how is it that the idea that Shaolin becoming the source of systematic fighting come into being ? Well, to put simply, over the course of several thousand years, Shaolin has always been a refuge for all kinds of people such as rehabilitated criminals, revolutionaries, soldiers, etc. Among all these there are certainly a lot of people who where very proficient with fighting. As such, the development of Shaolin fighting system began. In time, more and more martial artists of the common people went up to Shaolin to both study as well as exchange. Over time, more and more martial arts techniques as well as style began to gather in this temple. In a sense, this Buddhist monastery became something of a “market place” for martial arts exchanges. From there, all the styles that where gather were re-structured, re-analyzed and developed further. After a while, it was in turn taught back into the local areas around the temple and from there spread all over China." Cheers
