  1. Of course there are many Viet MAs. Just because you don't know of their existence does not mean they don't exist. There are three general categories of Viet MA in my mind. The kind that originates in Viet Nam and that is mostly and uniquely Vietnamese in character. Then you have MAs with foreign origins that were introduced and became widely practiced in VN (Hapkido, Aikido, TKD, Karate, Shaolin, Wing Chun). And finally you have the hybrids that were started by a Vietnamese, Vovinam/Vietvodao being among others in the third category in my opinion. Regardless of style, any MAs that come from VN or practiced by a VNese has a different flavor to it. It's only recently that some MAs are viewed as sports in VN. Hey, doesn't matter what style you learn, you better learn it well or face the consequences on the streets and during school breaktimes (Yes, I started fighting since first grade and maybe before that and many VNese do the same thing). If your classmates know you take TKD or Kung Fu with a style different from theirs, they will challenge you. If you practice out in the public, someone will try to challenge or humble you . To make things short, if you were going to fight a VNese that learned MA from Vietnam (not here in US), then you should really look out for their knees and elbows, although more elbows than knees. I am too lazy to type further. Use your caution fighting VNese because we usually are not big, so we have to rely on our skills to get ahead of the game.
