  1. sorry, i haven't read any of the replies... just the post.... hmmm... well, in MY post about the uses of open hand techniques i think i stated that i was off balance and he WAS coming in with punches (in fact i still got hit). I did an unconventional knife hand technique where i basically slapped him in a motion imitating that of slamming a door shut. I still like fists though, it's only that i found now that i have a new found respect for open hands... It was very effective and extremely fast, faster than my jab or hook has ever been. fskarateoz
  2. Yeah, i hadn't really noticed how good they are. i'm more of a fists man myself but i think i have developed a new respect for open hands. fskarateoz
  3. I have a pretty solid jaw, and yeah i'm experienced enough to know that u have to clench your teeth... I saw it coming n rather than take it in the teeth i just turned my head sideways, cos i know my jaw is tough. The guy i was sparring had headgear on n i got him seeing stars by hitting him thru his headgear, imagine what might have happened if he hadn't had that stuff on. fskarateoz
  4. I don't understand this 'most fights end up on the ground' thing... a good deal of the fights i have been in have ended with one guy on the ground in pain, but very rarely grappling. I'm not saying grappling is useless, because i am very much in favour of groundfighting, but even when people r on the ground they are throwing punches (which is what i do a lot of the time)... I think i've only been on the ground twice in a real fight. Most of the time fights have ended with either my opponent or myself on the ground in a good deal of pain, mainly head pain... fskarateoz
  5. I'm fresh from a full-contact sparring session with one of my mates from work, and i've foind something quite useful. He started attacking quite hard and fast, and got me off balance n threw a cross, but, in my off balanced state i threw a half palm-heel half knife hand to his temple n turned my head to take his cross on the side of my jaw (instead of a bare knuckle punch to my mouthgaurd, which bloody well hurts)... we hit each other at the same time, but this open handed strike of mine, which hit with the heel of the hand, was enough to make my mate see stars. All it was was the kind of movement one would make if slamming a door shut, and it was purely instinctual. I suggest anyone looking for the power of a hook with a bit more distance try this shot. I know Bas Rutten used to use it a lot in his Pancrase tournaments to good effect (they were only allowed to use open hands anyway). Just a thought on a new technique peoples. fskarateoz
  6. I'm a freestylist from way back and a portion of my training has been in judo/bjj... it's very important to know this stuff, it's just essential, because all the jab-cross in the world aint gonna help u if u r in someone's rear guard n about to be choked out... a lot of traditionalists don't understand this, and this is why they are teaching outdated systems and creating sub-standard advanced students. fskarateoz
  7. I wouldn't clinch for the groin factor... Knee yes, but not a silly clinch like u see in Thai fights. Say you were coming in off a jab and faked a cross to his face, grabbing him somewhere n then driving a knee into his stomach (just as easy)... he's bent over so now you would put a downward elbow into the back of his head to drop him... If u somehow get into a clinch situation you should go side-on and use a leg-roll, or reverse hip-throw to get him on the ground and either stomp him or mount and pummel... much much MUCH better than clinching. fskarateoz
