    Shorin-Ryu

Hey Dianna, I've been training in Shorin Ryu for around 6 months give or take. Up until actually taking the class the only reference that I had had was in a book called Shotokan Myths. It referenced the founder Kyan Cotoku and some of his exploits or at least supposed exploits. I took the leap, and thanks to my early years training in various other Chinese and Korean martial arts I'm progressing rather quickly and finding movements long lost coming back effortlessly. I find this system to be the most grounded and practical that I have personally taken in my martial arts experience. It's not the most beautiful when looking at face value, but when you see the subtlety of the movements and how economical they are, it shines. The more you learn the more you can appreciate. I'll reference an article written in a periodical about the forefather of my system Zetokukai which is Seibukan dojo. http://www.zentokukai.com/history.html Follow the link and download the pdf Any further questions feel free to pm me.
  2. I'm not sure if there is a difference. My Sensei uses both interchangeably; although it seems to be moving more toward Shorinji Toude now. The Sensei as a collective seem to be moving toward a more old school traditional approach to training. Perhaps that has something to do with it?
  3. I try to do kihon but this style is still new to me so I can still only remember half of Naihanchi and only seem to pick up one to two more movements after each class. There never seems to be enough time in each training session. Also, Youtube is definitely good and bad. What I wouldn't have given to have had access to it when my interest began as an 8 year old.... Thanks for the responses!
  4. What does everyone do on non-class days? I always include a good amount of stretching in my daily routine, but I lack guidance on some solid daily training habits.
  5. I know I'm new here, but I want to generate some good conversation. Who has practical application of their particular art; What were the circumstances, and what were the outcomes? There is a reason I ask...
  6. Excellent lead JohnASE. There is a Zentokukai dojo located close enough to me that was kind of under the radar. Sounds like an excellent school with good organizational history. I'm going to check it out on Tuesday and hopefully if everything looks good, sign up.
  7. Excellent! Thanks a lot for your help.
  8. Yeah, I went the Google route already. Just hoping by some miracle someone here might know of something that isn't listed on the web. Thanks though.
  9. I'm brand new here so please forgive me if I miss something before my first post. I'm looking for the best traditional Okinawan Karate dojo that I can find within a 30 mile radius of Newark Delaware. I have no preference in style whatsoever. The problem with this area, as I'm sure with many others, is that Karate is seen as something kids do, and the martial arts programs around here reflect that belief.
