  1. I hate it as im so 'involved' with the kata I have trained for years, so much in all of them. But after a few years of learning a new kata I start to like it more, it's to do with understanding it from a Bunkai and Oyo perspective for me- otherwise im dancing, and I can't dance well, at all.
  2. I would say the deeper concepts and techniques are hidden, unless you have an instructor that knows them there is little chance you would discover them, however 'hard' you train. Thats not to say you couldn't make use of kata and find alot of things on your own etc.
  3. Hard blocks work just fine when we don't have a choice but to use them or get hit hard........... The key is to use them from natural hand positions as opposed to Kihon mode. But like all major karate techniques, they are very multi functional and can be used as strikes, locks, throws etc.
  4. I think we each need to decide- back when I did sports karate, winning was most important to me. Part of the reason i stopped, I didn't always win and couldn't really see the point of it in relation to karate as i was beginning to understand. I had some good coaches and training partners, which certainly helped me do well over the years.
  5. Its been around 15 years since I competed in semi, Knock Down and JuJutsu tournaments. But a few things did me really proud in all formats, 1. Breath, lots of air! 2. take the first point, land the first significant hit, throw etc, the mental edge this brings is usual significant 3. Remember its a game, and always maintain a decent sportspersons attitude, tournaments have a habit of turning otherwise decent folk into proper idiots........ Ask yourself why your doing it, and prepare for it with a decent coach and training partners- otherwise just rock up and have a go, but don't expect the win, enjoy the day for what it is.
  6. I would say until you have, 8-12 years decent exposure in one art do not consider seriously training another side by side. And then choose one that is NOT similar technically, but consistent in say, mind set. Martial Sport or Martial Art is a significant element to consider.
  7. Im with you on that for sure, Bunkai is just the start IMO- like the txt books.
