Yellow Belt (2/10)

  1. Though I posted about discipline I feel being positive with students is very important. I make sure to praise students improvement. This often drives them to continue to push themselves. Too much negativity can have a real negative impact on students.
  2. This is what ive been told by the owner of the school I teach at. I usually give them for discipline with my advanced students when I dont get my yes sirs. I give a lot of calisthenics between drills as well though. I like them more than sitting down an unruly student because atleast they improve their fitness. I remember a lot of my instructors using excercise to discipline.
  3. Do you guys and gals think that giving pushups or mountain climbers when students act out, dont listen, or dont say yes sir is un justified or wrong?
  4. Congrats! Awesome way to start your mma career with a KO
  5. There are many traditions that can be maintained such as bowing, showing respect, even sing the language of the country of origin. These can be maintained while modifying and adding things to make the art more effective.
  6. I went to my second seminar last weekend. The two Sifu were John Riddle, and Sifu Singh. Both instructors were incredible. They were very open with their curriculum and material. On fri we did combat baton, or expandable baton. Because Sifu Riddle is a Leo it was police training based. After dinner we did a pepper spray course both of these came with a hard copynofnthe powerpoint a great future reference. On sat and sunday Sifu Singh really gave us some great Weapons training, and quite a bit of Jun Fan Jkd with focus on the straight blast, jeet tek, and the different areas of attack. I was really impressed with the way they had many instructors in their system there. So there was always someone accessible to help you. I had a lot of questions and I got real answers. I met a lot of like minded martial artists, and learned a lot. I am actually considering becoming part of their association.
  7. One of the worst things you can do is continue to back up against a good Taekwondo guy. You need to step to the side and create a better angle to counter. If someone is continually retreating they will often find themselves directly in their opponents kicking range. Not where you want to be when facing a good TKD player.
  8. Welcome to martial I mean a..... Karate forums.
  9. I don't just base my jkd theory on the Tao of jeet kune do. There was a series he made with M. Uyehara called Bruce lee's fighting method. It was released post Mortem. I do research those original methods but combat has evolved from that time. I more follow Dan Inosantos methodology. The style that resembles what bruce was doing in the late sixties and early 70's is often called jun fan jkd, or original jkd. The jkd concepts people have moved into arts like bjj, mma, Muay Thai, savate, and Kali. I love Ron Balicki, Dan Inosanto, and Vunak videos. Someday I will become a jkd instructor. I have a 3 day seminar coming up at the end of the month. It's going to be with John riddle, and sifu Singh. Right now I'm just working on improving my game in all areas.
  10. I do not desire to call it JKD really... It as others have said doesn't matter what it's called. I guess you could just call it my way of martial arts. I just have been heavily influenced by his theories. I' don't care what it's called I just include combative elements from many styles.
  11. I more use the concepts 1) 5 ways of attack 2) aborb what is useful 3) learning all ranges 4) not being bound to any style or culture 5) economy of motion extc. i do want to get some more serious JKD time under my belt with qualifies instructors.
  12. What's the name of your style? I am not sure what to call my art anymore. I incorporate a lot of western boxing, I am a blue belt in bjj, second Dan in Taekwondo, have studied and teach kenpo karate, and lately i have been training FMA. I consider myself a jkd stylist is this wrong? I have always been guided by lee's theories, and mostly have studied by book. I do have my second jkd seminar coming up at the end of this month. I would never say I teach jkd, but I have my own personal jkd.
  13. At the Dojo I teach at prices are kinda high by most of your standards. Our basic program starts at 179. I live in Boca Raton which is a well to do area. Our price is about average for this area. I know our neighbor down the road charges 200, I heard of another in the area charging 300 when the students upgrade. Crazyness....... I paid 125 in boston and 125 at American Top team. To me 125-150 is acceptable if you are getting good instruction, and getting value when you train.
  14. I like in S.D. to use hammer fists, palm strikes, and even gouges, to attack targets like the face or head, and my fists more to go to the body. Soft weapons for hard targets, and hard weapons for soft targets.
  15. To me that is rather old school. If kata is the foundation of a system why wouldn't you want to have a deep understanding of its application?
