  1. I just got back on the korner and i saw this . I think this has to do with not knowing how to fight be cause someone learned forms and was not taught to fight. mma you learn how to fight from the beginning.
  2. Are the students practicing in the video, doing yang long form? I don't do short form, but i did long form for years. I really like tai chi, it's a really good art for health reasons.
  3. I would go to a good bjj school and get the tools i need and if it ever came down to facing someone with ground skill then i would be ready. There are so many different way's a wrestler could come at you this is the reason why you should get a ground game. This i think would be the answer to those 2 tiny words, what if.
  4. I've been trying to do tai chi but i have no rotation in my lower back at all and i no longer teach at all . I love the martial arts but i will never be able to do them again. In 1956 and 57 the sports committee of china gave the instructors a choice teach for us or you will not teach at all . The tai chi we see now is being taught by people who learned the state sponsored tai chi and they push a lot on chi were as the tai chi coming out of taiwan is different and the chi thing is not pushed but the study of the form was the main thing so a lot has changed ,one thing that has not changed is a punch in the nose is still a punch in the nose , chi or not i tell people don't let the religion thing get in the way of you getting a good stand up and good ground game because you might have to protect your family and your self, train like you might not get another chance .
  5. In 1956 and 57 tai chi was changed by the sports committee in china and only what the government allowed was taught and those people who learned this now teach. Before this time the form was taught as being the grand ultimate fist now it is health . Yang lu chan was a great fighter and he took on all comers and never lost according to what is known about him. He didn't win by pushing them down , he used the form on them and this is how he ended up training the military. If i trained your troops and it took them 10 years to be good at fighting then how long would you wait for results , but if in say 3 months i could get you good at fighting then which would be worth more? I'm not going to say i know it all because i don't ,but if you do the moves in the long form to someone it will do great harm to them.
  6. By what i have seen this only works on there students not on people who don't believe and no one has ever proven this to work under fire, and i have been to dillmans seminars I do like his books on pressure point but in the chicago land area there is man who is called the human stun gun and he waves his hands and yell's and his student falls down . Then news people took him to a bjj place in Chicago and none of his stuff worked at all. Its to bad that there wasting there time with this ,if i were one of his students, i would have got myself lessons at the bjj place, money well spent.
  7. I saw this post about chi and i have been involved in test done on the body with ekg and we had a volunteer get hit and we had a doctor there and we documented the effects on the body. It wasn't about energy it was that the nerve openings lead to the brain and when hit on points the brain made something happen somewhere else. I taught yang style long form to the public from 1992 until app. 2 years ago when i was in a bad car crash and i have plates and screws in my lower back. Everyone who came in my classes who said they had special chi power and all that i would ask them if we could test it and when we were done, we would have a understanding that you should leave magical stuff out of protecting yourself, learn stand up and get a ground game and i think a person will be ok . Some people may not agree with what i am saying but if your a instructor then your students being able to protect themselves should be what is important not waving your hands and your attacker falling down.
  8. I don't think a person has to worry about the religion thing in martial arts , no matter what you do for protecting yourself you are going to have to learn how to put your weight into it to hit hard and to do good ground fighting you would have to know about leverage so the religion thing is something else. I don't see anything about hurting people as religion.
  9. In tai chi we use to break down every move with a partner. I don't know how that you practice it but we started with lift hands to the front and then holding the ball and stroke the peacocks tail . The names vary from school to school . If you know what they do then when you do holding the ball, you will end up with your partners head in the move. Then you will crank this is with the school i taught for . I like the art for health more than for fighting . Tai chi is great for the mind and it is used for all kinds of health reasons.
  10. I have 4 children all grown and grand children 1 daughter and all my children grappled, my daughter loved it and the way i saw was if a man got my daughter on the ground it was probably for one thing, so i wanted my daughter to have the advantage and putting her with male partners got her use to the ideal of how to deal with males , now i don't worry so much . If i had it to do over i would push her even harder because she's daddy's little girl.
  11. I know what Im about to say is not about a belt but, i started to work out at a karate school with a brown belt and i was new at the time, and he told me he was not going to wash his uniform until he got his black belt , I ask the instructor for a new partner . I still laugh when i think about it, a great memory.
  12. I started teaching yang style tai chi long form in 1992 and it is a great style for health and is good if you have a understanding of what the form really means . It is like one giant kata and every move has a martial art meaning but most people are happy with the health side.
  13. depending on who is your teacher, they could be similar in a lot of ways and the first thing would been the language barrier, kata that you have done may be so much like poomse, that it gets in the way, also sparring would be more kicks as where the type of karate you practice might be more 50 50 with hands and feet . tae kwon do styles are different from each other too. moo duk kwan is a type within what is called tae kwon do this one i studied for years . The inventor of this style studied Taekkyon, tai chi and studied out of Gichin Funakosh's books, so there is a lot of things to see in korean arts .
  14. I think the situation that a person finds themselves in, will make you make choices on what you do a lot of times. Such as, am i dealing with someone who is trained or is this person just a person who is going to swing away. Also people who train a certain way ,will they instinctively do what they have trained. When i worked for the state we had a certain way we had to do things and after a while it was like being on autopilot . Its funny how people really act while they fight, when i was younger i use to watch them while we waited for the police to show up, then it really got interesting. I do not see anything wrong with going to the ground, just like i don't see anything wrong with stand up, but i do think a person should while training realize what can happen with both and train accordingly.
  15. I myself being a martial arts person appr. age 12 now 50 and at the same time a guitarist for even longer, by what i have seen i would not want to go to the ground unless i had to. My reasoning is from seeing and being in fights in bars where they have people to stop fights who don't , sometimes you just cant get out of the way of it and you can't trust people around you, even friends will walk away and i think if you are ready for the ground, i think you already understand what can happen. If the guys stand up skill is better than yours going to the ground is a serious asset in a real fight with someone who wants to hurt you, just a observation from my youth.
