How long in a dojo to be able to defend yourself
Pablo replied to Pablo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I am reallly limited in schools. I am meeting up with a Soo Bahk Do school and another TKD school. I am calling a bunch of places, mostly Shokotan Karate as those are the only other types we have around here. I am a natural fighter, but my size is not an advantage and I have trouble reconizing and esaping basic moves. Hopefully that makes sense. I didn't take the Bruce Lee thing personally, I imagine a lot of people come on here expecting that. Its all good -
I live in ocala FL near Orlando. How do I enterh information to check the creditials ?

Hi I am pretty excited to start, so I have to type. So, ever since 1st grade living in Miami Springs I used to see this place called "Ray's Tae KWon DO" and I always wanted to go, but due to my family being tight on money and my mom's anti martial arts philosophy I never did. We moved up to central FL and I have enjoyed it. I always see a Tai Chi ojo and a Tae Kwon Do dojo on my way to school and it as always kept this flame broiling inside of me. Up until... Well, two weeks ago my uncle took me along to a Brazilian JiuJItsu class. It changed my life. I mean, I have always been astounded by the simplist of Martial Arts but by being in a class I couldn't get over it. The BJJ class even let me know a funnier thing; I naturally do all the stuff the teacher taught on that one day. (how to break a Triangle lock and some sort of complicated posture breaking technique) which I found cool. Now, after two days of feeling sore (Few work outs have done this to me, so I enjoyed it) I began looking at different types of martial arts and what would fit my body and preference. I came across the understanding that Korean martial arts focus on jumping kicks, which works perfectly for my persona as I am a small kid who has a great vertical. So after looking into nearby schools I got some information and called schools up. I have an appointment for Monday, Tuesday and Thurday with a Soo Bahk Do class, Shokotan Karate(Which, I am curious in, a Hard Kicking Karate fits what I would like) and a TKD class. I plan to enroll on July 1st or 2nd after I get back from vacation. I have quite a few options for schools, not so much practises though. (Mostly Karate [Kenpo or Shkotan]TKD and on Soo Bahk do and BJJ.) So I hope to make a good choice, because I want to stay at this school for years. I have always wante a belt and the confidence that I can fight. See, ever have I gotten into altercations with anyone other than my broters (two younger and one older). (I never hit the, I am great wrestler). Actually, now that I think about it, it is funny. I never have punched my brothers yet they have to me and I am great at take downs. When I first went to the BJJ class I lost 1 fight, won two (against two different people). Is it possible to be a natural wrestler? Or are most martial arts based of natural human movements, just refined? You might already be able to tell, but I am really intrested in getting started. So I will update this as time goes. Maybe I can make something of it. Does anyone have any stories they would like to share to the newbie? Oh, and any advice on certain styles or MA in general would be much wanted.

You did fine. He attacked others and you used your training. You defended others and yourself, the true reason MA were ever made. More over you regreted your actions showing your intentions were not to HURT him but rather to PROTECT yourself. Those are two key concepts; you acted with a good reason. You did no't act out of malice or wanting to attacking and use your training. I am just coming into MA and I hope some day, I can be just as good as you. I am looking into Soo bahk do at the age of 15, after seeing many family members hurt and a profound long time intrest in MA. Seeing people use it successfully only makes me wish July got here faster. MA was made to protect people and you used it perfectly. Kudos.

I talk to my mom and we got a meeting at a local Soo bahk do school. We are going to ave a free meeting and then talk about cost and other stuff. I am really intrested in thsi, I talked wit one of there teachers and she explained it and it is exactly what I am looking for. Mom is a little reluctant, but it is nice. When I go in, is there anyway to verify someones credintails? Like a website with lists or something?

How long in a dojo to be able to defend yourself
Pablo replied to Pablo's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have many reasons to study MA; I've anways ,liked them, how the Gi look and more, but I thought that if the average teenager tried to sucker punch me that I would be able to fight back some how. Is martial arts (in modern times) not really an effective way to defend yourself from the average attacker? I dont NEED it,but I would like it. I have never gotten into a fight with someone because they were P.O. at me. NEver will, I am the person to avoid those such altercations. I was just curious if TKD would be beneficail in that respect. I am deciding between TKD, BJJ and Kenpo. All intrest me and are near, all I must do is see the facility. I was just curious; I am not intending to be no bruce lee but I have seen people (good friends of mine at that) get broken bones and bloody faces from fights and all I want to do is know that if someone starts that fight I can effectively push them away. Is that clearer? lol -
TKD and Aikdo

If you take 3-4 class a week how long would it tae to get a green/red/black belt? -
She thinks fighting is a pointless task. And in my family, the males are not dominate. I have gone and showed her a jiu jitsu class and taken them (because my uncle is good friends with the owner) when she is gone once in a blue moon but she is hard against it. Claims it's a waste of money. I will continue to teach her other wise. As for training partner, my uncle and cousin and a friend go to BJJ often (2-3 times a week) so they would probably sparr with me and I also have my other siblings to play around with but I doubt any sparring would happen. I would most likely practise Aikido (forgot the name so I went based of memory). Does anyone have tips on making your groine more flexible/good moves to practise? I have visited some websites and I am in the process of mimicking the moves they describe (Horse Stance, Back stance/basic kicks). Also I am not ooking for being a blackbelt, but rather I am trying to improve my overall response and ability to protect myself from fights. EDIT DXw The style I plan is Traditional (If that is what you mean) with more emphasis on power of the kicks than anything. I also want to pick up alot of blockin technics. None- competition training.

TKD and Aikdo

Maybe I worded it wrong. I meant it as in, I will not go fight someone unless they have shown me agression. I am not a tournament fighter either. The knowleadge of both styles is so I will not have my rear handed to me. -
Would these two paired together be an effective style of fighting? I am using them for purely defensive purposes and I am a rather small person. (5'3" 110lbs). What would be the weakness of these two fighting styles? Are there any others you would reccomend above these?

Hi guys, I got reccomended here by another user from another website and I am really excited to learn all I can. Here's my story: I am 5'3" 110lbs sophomore in highschool. Pretty tiny kid. And I've always been intrested in martial arts. And sports (I am pretty active). I run alot (Play WR in Football) and cross country/ track. I am an outstanding jumper. The problem is, I have never been in any real fighting camps or anything of the sort (along with unofficial wrestling with family members). I have ALWAYS wanted to be able to defend myself and I have come to the conclusion that Tradition Tae Kwon Do or Aikido will be what is for me. Here is the diliemma: My mom calls these "violent" sports. So She will never let me participate in any. So I must self-train myself. Is it possible to get the basic's of TKD or any other martial art with out any intruction? I am talking purely me googling and practicing. I will keep myself focused if given a routine that works. Does anyone know a way to do it? The reason I want to do martial arts is: 1) Give me an activity to do when I am bored. 2) Learn a way to defend myself. My philosophy is "If someone hits me I want to damage them and or immobilize them with swiftness." I am not an agressive person by any means. None what so ever.
