White Belt (1/10)

  1. hi thanks sheephead they are very helpful
  2. i have these for my next grading and have wrote everything down due to old age. Although we cover these in class i would like to do an extra wee bit before next week class. Does anyone know where i could find a good video or book for the blocks. i would like them to be sharp i am grading for green belt in the style of wado ryu. Many thanks
  3. I am looking for a good explanation and guide to carry out a side kick correctly (sokuto). I am a beginner and my side kick looks like a round house for some reason. my problems is, do i cock the knee and rotate 45 degree? ending side on to the opponent. if a more senior rank had a decent video tutorial link that would really help me out. But there are so many out there i aint experienced enough to say which is a good technique. Many thanks for your time. my style is wado ryu This is part of my grading and although i am throwing what i believe to be a side kick out i know its technically poor.
  4. It was for practice more as i have only started and although i attend the dojo and the senior grades are very helpful i want to get a little head start if you know what i mean. If i only practice once a week with my memory it would be like running uphill with roller blades. At least with a little video or material i can go through each technique before next week.
  5. Does anyone know where i could find a decent movie or pictures of some of the basic blocks for my green belt syl. I see some around the web but cannot tell (lack of experience) of they are using good techniques or not.
  6. Looking back at your OP, Robbo, I wondered if you meant the speed of performing the reverse punch, or the speed of step & deliver. If it's the latter, do you find yourself first stepping and then striking? By this I mean, do you notice a slight pause, a time lag, between your step and your delivery? It's somewhat like block, pause, strike. Even a brief pause in that example makes the technique slow--and less likely to work. Have you practiced not going for power but for as close a step & punch as possible in terms of time? I learned from a Jeet Kune Do instructor that Bruce Lee reached the point in which he was punching faster than he blocked, meaning that if a punch were thrown at him, his punch landed before his block reached what was incoming! Sorry but my net is playing up. I was basically meaning drills to improve the stepping in and speed of delivery. I have been using cable weights in the gym and sparring lots. I know Rome wasn't built in a day and it will take experience/ time to improve the speed of delivery. When i am sparring i find it hard to know how to step into it to hit the opponent. Might sound weird lol but hitting bag is easier than a moving target. Should i step out with my lead foot or should i shuffle my back foot up then step into it. Perhaps squats would allow me to cover ground easier?
  7. Hi was just looking for some advice on how to improve the speed of my Gykuzuki. ie Training drills etc etc. I can throw a Gykuzuki but when it comes to stepping towards an opponent i think it becomes quite slow and in sparing i don't score much with it.
  8. i also just passed my yellow belt. Although the instructor calls the turns out. i remember these by using this the kicking drills and combo = mawatte Hanmi gamae (turn left fighting stance) kiai on first, tenth and turns Junzuki = mawatte Jodan uke. turn and block up. (Jodan = junzuki) JJ Gykuzuki = mawatte Gedan bari . turn and block down Gykuzuki = Gedan) GG
  9. the kicking techniques such has mae geri and roundhouse or snap punch /mae geri combo all end with turn (mawatte) and hanmi kamae ready to go up the hall again. i get that one (i hope) all kicks = mawatte into hanmi kamae i was just unsure if the junzuki ended with a mawatte jodan uke or gedan bari and if a surikomi (one step) effects this at all. perhaps it is something school related. I just wont see the sensei till next week and i would like to practice i understand the answer to the question above answer the other questions too. ( i hope) many thanks for your time.
  10. Hi, I have started karate for around four months now and am waiting to be graded for my first belt. I have one problem during my basic combination's and although it is simple i cannot get my head round it. I have problems with my turns (Mawette) at the end of the hall. i carry out 4/5 basic combination's up the hall but when it comes to turn and go up back down the hall again i get confused to which turn and block i should perform. At the moment i think i am turning using mawatte jodan uke for my punching combos unless opposite leg to arm i use the gedan bari and for my kicking combo i mawatte and return to fighting stance. Forgive me for my lack of karate terminology but believe me i am learning! Could someone with greater knowledge please enlighten silly old me.
