  1. Hoi! Our stance isnt that wide lol You must mean like in zenkutsu dachi stance when moving forward for example oi/gyaku zuki etc in which stance is more the long wide low stance you're describing. But generally ours kumite stance is about shoulder width. Why? Because one needs to be able to lift our front leg up off the floor comfortably and quickly (as for say mae geri keage/kekomi, , yoko geri keage/kekomi, and so on) If our stances was too wide or too narrow than about shoulder width this would either be impossible or just very hard to execute. There - my 2 cents for this morning what I meant was compared to kyokushin, shotokan has the wider stance, and maybe because a wider stance means more power. and is good for such techniques as the gyaku tsuki.
  2. I noticed the very big difference between the two is stance. Shotokan karateka's have a wide stance when sparring While kyokushin karateka's stand in a shorter stance while sparring can anyone explain why this is so?
  3. my higher ranking friend in karate said, reverse punch is the favorite in point sparring. and he said timing is essential.
  4. ohh, cool. yeah, I understand that's a good one to use.
  5. for the sport karate kind of sparring. What are you're favorite techniques to use? thanks
  6. ohh thank you for the response. I will do that
  7. I'm from Pennsylvania in the US. Pennsylvania is located close to the east coast line, along the North American continent. The Philippines look like a beautiful place. cool bro. Yeah it's beautiful here. You know Manny Pacquiao? kinda hot though, it's summer here. haha pardon my ignorance but what is Tang Soo Do ? is it a korean martial art? have you tried Karate also?
  8. sure thing bro Im from the Philippines by the way.. and you guys? thank you for this warm welcoming and for the replies.
  9. the lone Karate guy in the UFC.. His Karate style really confuses his opponents. and his techniques are spot on..
  10. Im viewing this more on the positive side. At least at this point fighting of Karate. I will be trained to another style of sparring. And maybe when I come up with full contact Karate competitions. My boxing background can help me out there. Thanks for the replies guys
  11. @Toptomcat:Yeah, I've really enjoyed boxing. Especially the sparring sessions. Really sharpens reflexes and gets you really used to hits in the face and body. I've seen the SEA games style sparring that they use. It is pretty odd to score a point then stop. But I'll give it a try. I like sports aspect because of competition. and you can't hit full force right? hmm. I'll give it a shot. If the training is good, then It can make up for the sparring. It's cool if they don't want it full contact. But It would be better to score points and not stop every time a fighter makes a point. Like TKD. but oh well, seems okay. @Karatequeen: Im interested in Karate to learn the art. And hopefully join competitions. Because I really like competition. I hope I enjoy Karate as much as boxing
  12. Hello people of this forum, Im taking up karate next week. And they spar like the SEA games Karate. I think the dojo is focused on sport karate. I've also been boxing for 3 years. And I want to try something new. Is this a good switch? or maybe something different? I also like the competition on Karate.
