in kumite, can a well timed gyaku tsuki be effective on it's own? not a counter gyaku tsuki but from your stance, throw a well timed fast one? or is it more effective in a kick punch combo? thanks!

im a yellow belt in shotokan, had a couple of years in boxing before. and i like shotokan karate, i just think the sparring style is not right for me. I see kyokushin karate with the hard kicks and punches. I think i like it more, so what can i expect from this style of karate? im thinking of switching soon.

My sensei is 5'2" and he won the All Japan Karate Championships twice, so I'd say it's quite possible for someone your size to do very well. After all, isn't that the whole point of karate (Giving people the ability to overcome a physically greater opponent with technique)? If karate used a method where only big and tall people could succeed, it wouldn't be much of an art imo. thanks man! the replies really helped me view this in a new perspective

hey thanks for the reply man! right now my dojo has that kind of competition the sport karate, the point competitions. im in shotokan karate, but in the long run, i also want to try mma. so i want to try both

I want to compete in tournaments. sport karate, im from the philippines, im 5'6 but i was wondering is it really a big factor if im not that tall, and not have that long of a reach? but i train really well. Is being tall and having a long reach a very big advantage in karate? or can i compensate for my height and reach by very good training and speed?

I tried to spar with my friends, and I found out it is harder to hit the head than the body. thanks for the answers!

ohh, i see sir. thank you for explaining

being a yellow belt in shotokan karate, the basic sparring technique is the gyaku tsuki, i just want to ask why more people tend to use the gyaku tsuki in the body, when the head is a much easier target? hmm,, thanks guys!

is a jab and reverse punch a good combo?
-
So what are good combo's or moves to use to gyaku tsuki with?
-
Why'd you end quitting boxing and joining shotokan? Just curious I didn't quit actually. I still love it. I just wanted to try something new
-
in sparring, does the gyaku tsuki have to be part of a combo to be effective? or can you just throw one right from a fighting stance?
-
I see, I guess I should practice it more often. after watching clips of it in sparring. I think I like it, Can you do it from a stance? or do you really have to step forward with the punch?
-
just asking, im only 2 months into shotokan. why is the gyaku tsuki the most favored techinque in shotokan karate?
-
I was just thinking about that.. Kyokushin is full contact. and they kick alot more than shotokan. but thing is, the shotokan karate dojo is 3 mins away from here. haha so oh well, Maybe I can find a good kyokushin place somewhere. But I don't know, I'll think about it. thank you for that suggestion:)

thanks for all the responses. Yes I need more control. and from what I see, in point sparring it's just a reverse punch they always use. or a two or three punch combo. and a few kicks here and there. and light contact is the key my sensei said. Because they were shocked the other day cause they said I was hitting my sparring partner too hard. But I was already holding back cause they said light sparring. Now I know what they mean, I guess it really is literally light sparring. I guess I have to work on speed more and technique. rather than power. thank you all again for the replies.

I have recently started training in shotokan karate. 2 months, and I had a boxing background for 3 years, and was used to the full contact boxing sparring. now the point sparring that shotokan was teaching us was all new to me. and the trouble I have is, I just sometimes throw flurries of hard punches that my sensei said could not score in competitions. any advice on how to improve? anyone from a boxing background that trained in shotokan to help me? thank you

in the SEA games sparring. are punches to head allowed in sea games karate? and how many points are awarded for a clean shot? thanks.
-
yeah. it's really funny how they say machida's style is not karate. When it REALLY, clearly is.

Yes AND no, because no matter what's done, some will respect Shotokan and some won't respect Shotokan....again....no matter what's done! Yes AND no, because no matter what...some will respect Shotokan and some won't respect Shotokan....again....no matter what's done! It's the old saying that says...""You can please all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time." Great response, makes sense to me.. thank you -

What makes you feel that Shotokan is put off at allt? Do you feel that it isn't as widespread as other martial arts? I don't know what style of karate you're studying, EP. Is it Shotokan? I do know that you enjoyed boxing in the past; could it be that you're put off personally because you enjoyed "mixing it up" when you boxed? Not at all I started shotokan karate recently.. done some research, and found out that some people really put it off because of the light contact aspect.. at least the sparring aspect. I was just thinking why not just change it to full contact.. to silence those who critique it because of the light contact aspect. but oh well, I enjoy shotokan karate anyways -
Lyoto Machida silenced the karate critics that karate was useless in a real fight.. Do you guys want to see more karate based fighters in UFC?
-
if the majority of the shotokan karate community would change the light contact to full contact. would shotokan gain more respect? because most people put shotokan off because of the light contact aspect. and they say it is not realistic. if it would be changed to full contact point sparring. would it silence the one's who put off shotokan karate style of sparring?
