Not necessarily. It is an open tournament. I have seen black belts perform kata/hyung from other styles. I am just looking for what is going to be more of a tournament kata. I actually have done Choong Jang the past two times this bi annual tournament has been going on. The judges are usually mixed. I think last year I had a Hapkido, Tang Soo Do, and TKD judge.

Here is a good video of Kusanku Another decent one Here is an ok video of Choong Jang Another decent oneI feel like every video I watch of the TKD katas they are so stiff. Whenever I perform them I always try to add fluidity to them. Which is why I am leaning towards Kusanku. I think it is a little more "showy" for an open tournament and has a lot of variety.

Hello there. I need an opinion of anyone who knows both Isshinryu and Taekwondo. So I am doing a tournament this Saturday. It is open. I am competing as a TKD black belt (Sho Dan soon testing for 2nd, but I am also brown belt 2nd kyu Isshinryu). I am debating which kata would look better for a tournament: Kusanku vs Choong Jang. I have been doing both kata for a while now and am very comfortable with both. I have been practicing both as well quite heavily. I plan on using one for initial competition, then using the other as backup or if I make the running for grand champion. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I have looked at his website. Thank you for posting it! I will defiantyl consider this school.

Thank you. I have not found a school yet. Far from it. Right now I'm just trying to see what my best options are. I'm looking for a good traditional school that is not just a "black belt factory", ya know what I'm saying?

Hello! I have looked at Sensei Murray's website quite a few different times. I have thought about SUNY Brockport, he has a location there, but I am also considering University of Rochester. He seems like a good instructor to train under. I would like to know more about the school though, which I might visit one of the schools while on a college visit.

Hello, I am looking to go to college in the Rochester area and I want to find an Isshinryu dojo to train at. I see there is quite a selection in the area. My question is: Is anyone familiar with any of the dojos? Thank you!

Thank you. That helps. I know what you're saying about learning a technique wrongly. But like I said, my girlfriend's dad (who happens to teach at the Taekwondo doje where I take) is also a 4th Dan in Isshinryu. He said if I ever need help to come up and he could help me out in TKD or Isshinryu. So it's not like I'm completely hopeless there. Belive me when I say there are no local dojos! Not even in the cities around me. It's really ridiculous. The reason I was going to buy "The Encyclopedia of Isshinryu Karate" is because it was written by Tatsuo's son in law, grandmaster Angi Uezu, 10th Dan. A direct student of Shimabuku. But this book "Essential Isshinryu" looks really good too. So we will see...... Thats why I'm searching and searching desparately for an answer.

Are there any good sites that sell fairly inexpensive sparring gear?

Obama Gets A Black Belt
isshinryu607 replied to sensei8's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
That makes me so mad. That is just so stupid to give Obama a black belt in TKD because he didnt even work for it. That is so disrespectful to the art and to all of the black belts that earned it! -
I was suprised that in my Taekwondo class, you cant spare til youre an orange belt! In isshinryu we could spare right away if we wanted to

being a long time Isshinryu student and a just starting Taekwondo student I can say it hasnt confused me. Just keep practicing both and you will do fine.

Well no one really answered my question yet. I know it's not the same as being tought by a sensei, but I just want a reference book for learning new katas and techniques. My girlfriends father is a 4th Dan in isshinryu so maybe he could help me out too. I am NOT giving up on Isshinryu even though there are no dojos in my area. Anyway, has anyone read "Essential Isshinryu" or "The Encyclopedia of Isshinryu"? Are there any good isshinryu guides?

Hello. I'm a new Taekwondo (ITF) student. Are there any good books or training manuals to guide me through my journey? A book with forms, techniques, belt requirements, etc.

Hello. I used to be an Isshinryu student since I was 7, but then when I was 11, my sensei had to shut his dojo down because of personal issues and he could not get insurance for his dojo. I'm now 16 and just starting Taekwondo, but I have not totally given up on Isshinryu. I've tried to look for books to self teach myself. I've looked at this new book called "Essential Isshinryu" and "The Encyclopedia of Isshinryu", but have not actually read in them, just saw them on Amazon.com. My question is, is there anyone who can tell me a good isshinryu manual including katas, techniques, belt requirements, etc.? (And if anyone has read the books above, are they worth getting?)
