  1. I really don't want to start a Judo vs BJJ thing, but I think some things must be set straight. Yoshida was choking Royce, maybe it was loose, maybe it was tight, but Royce was not moving at all, and it appeared that he was stuck in that position. The ref did not want Royce to die, as far as he could tell he was out, as he had stopped moving. Also, the Gracies join MMA fights where rules are rules, if they lose by decision, that is a loss, they agreed to the rules. I do respect some of the Gracies, Helio and Ralek namely, but Royce is just the worst, and the most arrogant.
  2. You were speaking of exceptions rather than rules, I would say that fight was an exception to the rule of Yoshida kicking butt in general. I think it was obvious there was something wrong with Yoshida that fight (besides getting his --- handed to him). And when two practitioners of different styles face off, one with a general focus on grappling, and the other with a focus on submissions, I think it says something when the submission stylist gets mounted and choked out by the general grappling style. Of course I am referring to the first fight between Yoshida and Royce. Nonetheless I have nothing against BJJ, was just taken aback by the quote a little. Of course it helps to know the general strategies encouraged in the art your opponent practices, but it is not necessary to train in it, it is better to know the specific strategies used by the fighter. On a side note: I do hate Royce Gracie though, complains every time he loses a fight, takes steroids to beat Sakuraba, etc.
  3. I concur! Excellent post, a solid post! Please correct me if I am wrong but I do not belive that Yoshida trained jiu jitsu, and neither did Sakuraba.
  4. Been doing Judo for four months now, going pretty well. Still have not done any standing randori. I've learned about four throws, four pins, and two arm locks. We do ne waza randori and practice throws almost every day. Can't wait for the tournament in June! (white belts only do ne waza in the tournament, though all belts but black participate)
  5. Well I just started Judo about a month and a half ago to compliment my Shotokan, and so far I think that it is a very good compliment. Since Shotokan has pretty much no clinch or groundwork, Judo fills that gap nicely. I might just be lucky and go to a good dojo but at my dojo we do about 50/50 ground (newaza) and standing (tachiwaza), and, contrary to popular belief, the groundwork is definitely more than enough for self defense, with pins, chokes, and armlocks, if you're interested in that.
  6. Just want to say that that is not legal in Judo, so he might want to stay away from leg grabbing for a while.
  7. Hey, just wanted to say I've been doing Judo for about a month at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, and I'm having a lot of fun. It started out slow with just learning break falls, but we eventually moved onto pins and newaza randori. I have just finished the one month beginner session, and have joined the rest of the class. Thanks for the advice everyone!
  8. At my dojo they don't really teach tekki. We do it like this: Name of Kata (The level you must know it at) Heien Shodan (10th kyu) Heien Nidan (9th kyu) Heien Sandan (8th kyu) Heien Yodan (7th kyu) Heien Godan (6th kyu) Bassai Dai (5th kyu) Jion (4th kyu) Empi (3rd kyu) Kanku Sho (2nd kyu) Kanku Dai (1st kyu) Sewyushi No Kon (2nd and 1st kyu)
  9. Well since I have Shotokan for standing, and Judo for clinch (and some ground), I'd probably go with Jujitsu for more focus on ground. I also think Kendo would be cool, and I hear it is similar to Shotokan in some ways (the rhythm and such).
  10. Shotokan Karate - 3.5 years, 2nd kyu (brown belt) Judo - 2 weeks, no rank yet
  11. Thanks for the advice, but I don't believe that there are any JJJ schools in Toronto, and most people here agreed on Judo. I will start Judo in January. (if someone can find a JJJ school in Toronto, I'd check it out)
  12. Is that Sueyoshi No Kun?...I'm not asking to be a jerk or anything, I just really wanna know if im thinking of the same one you are... Ummm....yeah, probably. I have no idea how to spell it, just pronounce it. I will change that!
  13. Hi, I'm bub4444 from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I practice Shotokan Karate (currently 2nd kyu), and I will probably start Judo in January. I have flat feet (my feet are not arched), which certainly doesn't help with some kicks (I find it especially hard to roundhouse kick properly). Any other Karateka have flat feet? Anyways, I'm glad I found this site, the members seem very polite and helpful.
  14. I am 2nd kyu Shotokan, and I know: Heian Shodan Heian Nidan Heian Sandan Heian Yondan Heian Godan Bassai Dai Jion Empi Kanku Sho Sueyoshi No Kon (bo staff kata)
  15. For the record I am male. Thank you for your advice, I will try out Judo.
