I never fail to be surprised by, in any style, the number of pointless, fancy moves that work in theory, but never do.
-
I find it kinda funny how people joke about 'Judo chop's when there isn't really any chopping in judo.
-
A knife hand, or a 'karate chop'? Also funny, is that for all of people's joking, knife hands and ridge hands can work.

Dating in the dojo
Nobodysaidbella replied to Nobodysaidbella's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
But with an instructor? -
Yes, but that isn't a just fight! If you're attacked, fine, fight back. But a trained martial artist against a person with no real combat training is anything but fair. If you've sufficiently incapacitated them enough to get away, I see very little reason to continue unless defending someone else, or they refuse to surrender. If they've surrendered, there is absolutely no reason to continue 'defending' yourself.

Dating in the dojo
Nobodysaidbella replied to Nobodysaidbella's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, I think it's a terrible idea. I mean, there are exceptions to every rule, but it's generally the instructor would have the upper-hand. Maybe a sempai, but still. -
Dating in the dojo
Nobodysaidbella replied to Nobodysaidbella's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well yeah, the couple running ours met when she started training under him a decade or two ago. Now she's a 3rd and he's a 5th, and they've got three or four studios together. You couldn't tell that they're married though, since he's totally the boss. But I always thought it would be awkward dating an instructor. At least in the beginning. -
I came across this is another forum, and I thought I'd ask it in here, since I've had a friend in this situation. What do you guys think about people dating in the dojo, especially instructors and students? I think it might be possible, but I think there are more cons than pros when it come to dating your student/instructor. Opinions?

Wearing Gi outside of Dojo?
Nobodysaidbella replied to Seija's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I love it. Yeah, I talk to my friends about it, but I don't like to advertise it. I mean, I goof around with like knifehand blocks (not in public) and such, but I never demonstrate anything for anyone unless they specifically ask me. -
I agree. Assuming you're capable, you shouldn't leave if someone could get hurt. Though I'm sure a few quick arm-breaks could prevent the attacker from hurting someone else before the authorities get there.
-
In my mind, I was just thinking of a cat fight, but yeah, you're right. Revenge is when you go beyond the force necessary for escape. If you've broken someone's leg, then (assuming they don't have friends or weapons) there's no need to continue to trash them, especially if they're obviously not going to be able to fight back. If it's a big deal, like attempted rape, call the police.

Oh I don't mean literally whack her and call it a day. I mean whatever I need to do to get her to back off. I don't want to smash every bone in her body when a simple chop to the throat would do it, but I'm not averse to using force to make my point. Also, I'm not saying women don't fight as well as men, but it's the intentions that matter to me. A girl/girl fight is one thing, but if a man tried to attack me, it's probably for a much darker reason, and that's not someone I'm willing to 'whack a few times until they back off.

Neck Break...wait, what?
Nobodysaidbella replied to cathal's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I doubt that neck break would be entirely effective. And certainly not as effective as, say, an armbar imo. As said earlier, imagine the legal ramifications for killing someone. I've been told that if you have a black belt, you can be charged with possession of a deadly weapon. -
Quickest to Blackbelt status?
Nobodysaidbella replied to hawkeyes's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You're totally right. Every belt should be a challenge. -
I would do about half the damage they were intending to do to me. If some girl on the street is looking to pick a fight, I'd just whack her a few times until she understood that she should not be fighting me. Now if some huge man was coming onto me, or trying to kidnap me, then I wouldn't hesitate to go to town. I said this in another thread, but I'll repeat it. My sensei once said "If you came at me on the street and tried to take a swing at me, I could go to town and break every bone in your body and have a field day, but who's at fault?"

Quickest to Blackbelt status?
Nobodysaidbella replied to hawkeyes's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No black belt should be easy or fast. If you get a black belt, it better not take you less then 4 years, else you haven't gotten a real black belt. TKD schools that give out black belts in 2 years are probably Mcdojos. -
Rape and getting in a fight are two different things in my eyes. In a fight I would avoid all contact unless absolutely necessary and run when I got the chance. Martial art skills are like weapons. You wouldn't shoot someone unless absolutely necessary. I can't believe that joesteph (surprised, not that I don't actually believe you). Rape is a total ruination of human dignity and one of the most hideous crimes in existence. If someone tries to violate me, then I believe I have the right to violate them:gouging out their eyes, armbarring them, choking them, even killing them if necessary.

If the confrontation cant be avoided....
Nobodysaidbella replied to cross's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree with JusticeZero. Confrontation is avoidable up until the first punch is thrown (which should always be by them). Besides messing/sparring with my friends, I have no desire to get into fights. I don't want to show off and break off someone's arm or leg in the name of self-defense just because they shoved me. That's not why I train... to be the aggressor. Besides, martial artists can be liable in situations like that. If a girl tried to pick a fight with me, I could go to town and break every bone in her body, but who's at fault? (Obviously since I'm a girl, it'd be different if a guy tried to attack me). I was told a story once about one of those little Buddhist monk/martial artists who was walking down the street at night, and was being followed by some thugs. Every time he asked them to stop, they'd laugh and harrass him. Having had enough, he kicked over a stop sign. THAT stopped them. -
I can only speak for myself when I say there's much less power and flexibility in a front leg roundhouse kick. I'd use it for speed and then set it down in back followed by a back leg. If I'm going to kick to the head, I need to have a good base, because balance is difficult when kciking that high. I'm flexible and strong enough to do it, but it won't help if we both end up on the floor. I'd prefer the neck if they can't block it.

Good to know. Don't want the evil spirits to come into the room. Yeah that, or maybe it's because you don't want to tear up the mats. Fancy that idea.

That there seems to be more to it. Signing up for an American Shotokan class, I worried it would be like a mcdojo style of karate. Apprently not, because I am guarenteed to come out with a few bruises.
