White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. I would go with Goju. I have been practising Gojuryu (not the USA variant), genwakai and wadoryu for 20 years and because of a move to a remote area, I had to switch to Shotokan, in order to keep connected to a Dojo. Shotokan is quite different, since it is sports orientated, whereas Goju was arts orientated. Many "handy" techniques in Goju, like using a lock after for instance a jodan uke, are not allowed in Shotokan. Last week, I did an "ancient" geri, which is only seen in Shitoryu and Gojuryu. My opponent was quite stunt, I must say. I would do with Goju, if I was in your position.
  2. My favourite Gi are: nr 1: Hirota nr 2: Tokyodo IInternational Both brands come completely customised if wanted.
  3. Or another option is purchasing a tailored gi, for instance, from Tokyodo International (Formerly part of Shureido). YOu pay a little more, but for that you will get a perfect fitting gi.
  4. If you are still looking for a Shureido Gi, don't look any further. Tokyodo International (Shureido's new name) is now available in Canada, fully customised and personalised (if wanted). See https://www.karategi.ca. If you are looking for a heavy weight gi, I would recommend the K-10. The K-10 is an improved version of Shureido K-10. Or, if you can afford it, Tokyodo's top quality gi, SP-1000. Tokyodo International is currently in the Top 3 of best quality gi, made in Japan.
  5. If you put your Gi in the wash dryer, it will damage the cotton. If you really have to shrink your gi, set your dryer to low heat. If your dryer does not have that setting, I would find a commercial dryer. I have seen Tokaido Gi (not the USA versions, but the genuine Tokaido from Japan), which fell apart after only one year of use (and dry in dryer). Tokyodo International has the option to order a fully tailored and personalised karate gi. These gi cost a little more than your regular premium quality gi, but it will fit like a second skin.
  6. Tokyodo International has the option to order a fully tailored and personalised karate gi. These gi cost a little more than your regular premium quality gi, but it will fit like a second skin. An option, maybe?
  7. Are there any genwa kai karateka who have switched to shotokan, just like I have? I find the two styles quite different.
