SaiFightsMS
Anyone really love to work with the bo? Have favorite ho jundo's ? Favorite bo katas?
Tobias_Reece
I like working with the bo. At the moment its the weapon I feel the 'safest' with. By that I mean I feel that I won't drop it in competition, or hit myself around the head with it!!! Shu-shi-no-kon is the only kata I know with the staff, and its won me two regional competitions (and I've only entered two, so thats got to be good!!!) I dont have a favourite hojoundo, but I like the kake-uke technique (hooking block) I think it can be quite effective if used properly. SaiFightsMS
The bo was the first weapon I worked with, gee that was about 5 1/2 years ago. When I started I had to use a smaller toothpick bo because of damaged shoulders from rotator cuff tears. It was really strange at first. But the more I worked with it the more I liked it. We do a kind of a pre kata called shiho with short movements to all 4 sides to get started. Then we do 2 katas that are more club specific. Well some shi-to groups do the one. Then we do two versions of sushi a dai and a sho. After that Cho un No Kon. It is kind of fun. Sagakawa No Kon is different. I like it a lot. I think it is my favorite bo kata. Jiggy9
Talking about videos, I have never ever used a bo simply because no one teaches weapons out here. I managed to pick up a pair of nunchuks and learn somewhat from videos, books, net and improvisation... I was wondering if any of you guys could suggest a good, Bo book or video so that I may learn it, the best I can, at home ? Tobias_Reece
Sai: All the videos are superb - the katas are flmed very well, with plenty of slow and fast bits!!! The hojundo are clearly sort out - HOWEVER - my examiner is a direct student of Nishiuchi Sensei (the man who does the video), so my syllabus is exactly the same. Jiggy : I recommend Nishuchi Sensei videos on bo. Start with Volume one and work onto volume 2. The videos cover all parts of the IOKA syllabus, so if u wanna grade, contact the organisation, and I'm sure they will be pleased to help. Oh, and if anyones interested, the IOKA only hasa pprox. 350 members worldwide. I wondered why my examiner was pleased when I said I had 6 students who want to join!!!!!LOL Oh and Jiggy, BECAREFUL.....I purchased Fumio Demuras books (all of them). They are useful, and are very good books, but they are based around Japanese Bo-jutsu, not Matayoshi Kobudo. Its kinda like buying a book on Wado-Ryu if you practice Shotokan. Hope this helps Tobias "You Are Never Given A Dream Without Also Being Given The Power To Make It True. SaiFightsMS
I learned one version of tokomine no kon. However, I don't feel comfortable enough with it to include it on my list. I have seen about 3 different variants of it.
